Which is the best: Acoustic, electric acoustic, or electric guitar?
I'm debating about which to buy. I'm planning to buy on eBay or at a local music store, but I need to know the cons and pros or each. I'm thinking more about electric acoustic in case of performances, but then I kind of want that distortion and whammy with the electric. HELP??????
Electrics are far overrated, I started on an electric, I figured it would be easier to learn on, funner to listen to, and better for performing. Wrong. wrong. and wrong.
I found that Acoustics are much more conventional, you can just grab it and go anywhere, play for a friend. No amp needed! They sound gorgeous (if you get the right one) Go hunting for an acoustic with beautiful natural sound that you could listen to for hours. Try many different ones to make sure you are choosing your personal favorite. Dont let the salesman totally convince you on which you should buy. If the ones at the store are a bit pricey, try local thrift stores!! There are some great deals that sound just as nice as the new ones. I have a used acoustic and I got it for a GREAT deal from a thrift shop. When I play for friends, they are all so amazed with the sound and they even get jealous when they tell me that they bought their NEW guitar for over 300$! When mine was under 100$.
But then again, everything depends on what you are using it for. If you are just starting to play, you shouldn't worry about performances. Leave that for later. Get a guitar that will hook you to the sound. This way you are encouraged to practice and to continue to learn. So many people start guitar and give up/quit within months.
Acoustics are easy to learn on also because the strings tend to be more gentle. The electric strings are rough and in the beginning will bruise your fingers if you play regularly. You will get calluses either way but the electric is more intense of an ache. If you are playing more harsh music, maybe with excess sliding up and down the neck, I had some friends where their fingers even bled because of the rough new electric strings. Not very fun, even if it makes a cool noise.
Oh, and about the whammy, when you have a whammy on a guitar, they go out of tune reaaaally fast. You have to tune it constantly.. not really worth it. Plus they are more of an accessory than a necessity.
Overall, I say the acoustic is a better buy, I wouldnt use ebay for that though, because you can never tell the sound. And thats what matters most for your money. I would say go to a local thrift store or shop and check it out!!
