I don't know about Sydney, but in Melbourne we have two different free weekly music promotion magazines (BEAT and Inpress) that are distributed through out the city (record shops, train stations, cafe's etc).
They advertise and review gigs and CD releases, promote up and coming artists, interview bands and so on. In the back they also have a classified section with different bands advertising for musicians. Do you have any equivalent to this in Sydney? If so, submitting an advert is a great way to start.
Alternatively, you could also try answering an advert as opposed to submitting one - with all your gear, you're a sure fire hit for a someone looking for a guitarist.
Also, use the internet to your advantage (as you are doing).
Join band forums, particularly Australian bands. It's a place in which you're always bound to find other young aspiring musicians.
...Or you could just ask around school.
