What's the difference between a classic guitar and an acoustic guitar?
I don't know much about guitars, so sorry if this sounds a little dumb. It's just they both look the same so i was wondering what was the difference.
Now a day when most people use the term "Classical" guitar they are referring to an acoustic guitar made to be use only
with nylon strings.
When they use the term "acoustic guitar" they are thinking of
a guitar that uses steel strings.
I can understand your confusion because BOTH guitars are
"Acoustic" which means the sound is produced within the body (box cavity) of the guitar.
They both "look almost the same" but if you look closer the
body of the "classical" is slighly smaller than standard steel strings guitar. Also the overall length of the steel string guitar
is a little-bit longer from top to bottom.
Manufacturers of steel-srings guitar also accomodate musicians that want a "larger body"(sound-box) by designating the guitars with model # like 00 or 000 size.
The classical guitar seldom (if ever) is changed in their body size. Very expensive guitars ( $5,000 up)of both styles -
"Classical" and "acoustic", are made by Luthiers to the specifications of the player.
Classical (nylon strings) guitar are built light and with woods to emphasise resonance. They cannot handle the pressure on the nut/neck that steel-strings can exert on them.
Never put steel strings on a classical guitar.
Acoustic (steel strings) guitar will not be damaged if you put
nylon strings on it but the timbre will be different (maybe more mellow - less bright).
I am glad you ask that question because many people I encounter at guitar stores don't really know the difference other than they use different strings.
