What to look for when buying a Dobro style acoustic?
Am thinking about picking up a Dobro style acoustic to play in the style of Xavier Rudd or Ben Harper. Im not very familiar with the instrument and was wondering what to look for when selecting one. How much does the wood affect the sound or is it just the metal resonator that generates the sound. And since I am going to use a slide then does the neck wood matter? What about the shape and style of the metal resonator, does that make a difference.....and "f" holes, or is any acoustic "hole" gonna work the same? Just looking to get the best for my money and know very little about the construction of Dobro's. Any help would be great. At the moment I am looking at either a $400 CAD. Epiphone Dobro and a $500 CAD Fender Dobro but would like more than "Epiphone" "Fender" to make my decision.

i reccomend looking for one with a very nice make of wood: strong and sturdy.
also, make sure the neck is square with the body (if its a square neck), and i advise you dont get a plated one as it tarnishes easily, and is very heavy, however, a plated resonator has an incredible sound. nickel and brass are good platings.
you want to spend about $500 for a good one. you want one with f holes id say, and probably a tricone: you also need two metal fingerpicks and one plastic fingerpick, and i reccomend you get a bottleneck slide. so: f hole, square neck, plated, tricone, bottleneck slide: this is a great comination
