Can I use nylon strings on my Steel String Folk Guitar?
can I...? cause I really hate this sound. also, I'm a beginner.. and I was wondering what the difference was between a classical and a folk guitar?
yes you can but make sure you get ball-end strings. Normally classical strings don't have anything on either end, and are literally tied to the bridge using a special knot.
The other poster is correct that you may have to adjust your truss rod.
Doubtful that you'll have trouble with strings breaking, but the nylon strings may be too wide to pass through the nut of your steel string guitar, with the result that they may pop out.
Anyway, no harm will be done if you try this experiment, but the other poster is also correct in stating that you'll probably want to get a classical guitar if you intend to stay with this sound. Be aware that the neck on a classic guitar is MUCH wider than that on a steel-string guitar.
Another thing you can try is a set of nylon-wound steel strings. LaBella makes them and they are expensive in comparison to most regular steel string sets. They won't sound *exactly* like classic guitar strings, but you might like 'em.
