Can anyone help me understand the CAGED system on guitar?
so i barely started practicing the guitar and i just found out about the CAGED system but i dont get what it is...is it really complicated? im 14 by the way
The CAGED system is a way of looking at the fretboard and finding alternate positions to play chords and scales. If you're just starting to practice, you may be getting ahead of yourself. The CAGED system isn't complicated, it's designed to simplify the way you mentally organize the fretboard.
If you haven't started working on barre chords, this will be harder to explain. Any chord is formed of 3 or more specific notes. For instance, a C major chord has C-E-G. When you play a standard open C on guitar, the notes repeat: G-C-E-G-C-E but the chord only contains those 3 notes. Anyplace on the guitar neck that you can find those 3 notes...in any order, you'll have a C chord. It's a big neck right? Well the CAGED system tells us what other places to look, and the order they occur in.
C= open C chord
A= barre across the 3rd fret and finger an A formation, you'll have all the notes of a C chord.
G= barre across the 5th fret and finger a G chord, you'll find the next set of notes that make a C chord.
E= If you place a barre on the 8th fret and finger an E chord, wanna guess what that is?
D= If you barre a D formation above the 10th fret and you have a C chord too.
Every major, minor and 7th chord can be played by using some variation of the CAGED system. For instance, an F chord is simply an E barred on the first fret. The order of the CAGED formations remain the same. Since you're starting with the E shaped chord, the next shape is D, (barre across 3rd fret) then back to the head of the line with C, A, and G.
Okay, it's starting to sound complicated...especially if you aren't playing barre chords yet. As a beginner, the thing you can take away from this is that if you learn scales based around those 5 chord shapes, you can move them around and know scales anywhere on the neck.
This knowledge can also help you if you need to use a capo to change keys. Use the example of the F chord. Somebody wants to sing a song in the key of F using the chords F-Bb-C. Arrg...that's a nightmare if you can't play barre chords. But you know that if you barre...or capo on the 3rd fret, you can play an F using a D shaped chord. D-G-A is much simpler to play.
So has probably been more than you need to know....that's one problem with learning from the web: it's easy to jump around and get ahead of yourself. If all this seems complicated, it's just because you need to work on the basics first. Keep CAGED in the back of your head though.....it will all start to come together as you play more. I've been playing guitar for 46 years, and only recently heard of the CAGED system. It's not a gimmick.....somebody just put a name to a method that a lot of musicians like myself have used for years.
