Is this a good acoustic guitar?
Is this seem like a good acoustic guitar for a beginner?

Also, how hard is it to teach yourself guitar? How long does it take? What are some good books to learn from?
If I use a pick, will the chances of scratches be less?
It looks okay but the price makes me very suspicious. Many beginner guitars are almost unplayable, and if you're just a beginner and have no experience, you'd think it was -you-. 8^) You should bring a guitar player with you to try out a beginner guitar, and if you're getting it on the Net or mail-order you should be sure you can send it back.
Guitar is not a hard instrument to learn on your own, and I think that's one reason it's so popular. You get a book on chords (or look for them on the Web) and practice a few, then learn how to fit them into songs (which you have to sing. Sorry. You can't learn guitar without singing!)
At first you need to build up strength in your fingers, the left hand that holds down the strings. So at first you can't practice more than 15-20 min. at a time (but you can do that more than once a day).
Every person I know who learned to play the guitar thought at one time that there must be something wrong with his hands. But if you stick with it you get past that.
Also be aware that this guitar you referenced is nylon strings. This makes it easier to play because you don't have to push the strings as hard, and also because nylon stringed guitars have a wider fingerboard so you have more room. But if you're interested in pop music (rock, C&W) you want steel strings. Nylon strings are for 'classical' and folk music.
