Which guitar string to use for my acoustic?
I've got myself a new (techincally very old) acoustic guitar. It's a franciscan and I'm looking to see what sort of string I can use. What are my options and what are the benefits of each string type?
First off, you need to know if this is a nylon string or steel string guitar - vastly different. Try to put steel strings on a nylon and you'll ruin the guitar. If you do the opposite, then it won't sound good (too little tension). Also, regular nylon strings can't be fastened to a steel string guitar.
If you have three treble strings that seems to be made of plastic, then you have a nylon string (classical) guitar. The basses are wound with silver plated copper wire (at times, bronze wire) - the core is nylon.
If you have three plain steel strings, then it is a steel string acoustic. The basses have a steel core and they are wound with bronze or a phosphor/bronze alloy.
The most common style of wrapping on the bass strings is round wire - so-called round wound strings. What the majority of players are using (on acoustic steel string guitars) is light or medium gauge, round wound bronze strings.
You may also consider using what is called silk and steel (for steel string guitars). These are lighter and softer than regular steel strings. Some like them - others hate them. Give less sound and does not last very long.
You also have coated strings, like the Elixir Nanoweb. They last longer than non coated strings and many players swear by them.
Apart from that, the brand is really not that important. Find something you like and stick with it! And in order to find something which suites you, you will have to do some testing 
Lighter strings are easier to play, but give less sound. heavier strings is slightly harder to play, but give more sound. There is a slight variation in sound from bronze to other type of alloys. Hard to explain sound, so you'll be better off testing for yourself.
