can i use a overdrive perdal ia a preamp in a guitar amp fx loop?

i am a heavy metal guitarist and i want more gain, could i use my zakk wylde mxr overdrive pedal as a preamp or should i buy a pre amp to use. the amp i am using is the marshall mg50fx not the dfx the fx. it has a fx loop so i was wondering if the overdrive pedal could be used as a preamp for more gain.
